While newspapers were once a ubiquitous part of nearly every American household, digital delivery has supplanted the paper’s thunk on the front stoop. With digitization, everything old is new again, though, and it’s proved a boon for genealogists of all abilities and perspectives. Our gathering will consider ways in which search engines and algotrithms can be harnessed to identify your research targets in these publications which are so vital to our genealogy research.
Join Dave Mc Donald, The Preacher Genealogist®, for this session on using and finding the gems hidden between the want ads and the sports pages in the newspapers of our past. Beyond the vital records, newspapers provide color and the texture related to our ancestors’ lives and livelihoods, creating a richer narrative for genealogists.
Dr. Dave McDonald bio
Dave Mc Donald, with more than 50 years’ research experience and nearly as many as an instructor, is a past president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists [BCG] and Association of Professional Genealogists [APG]. He has lectured nationally and internationally on genealogy research and methods and has a genealogy practice in Madison, Wisconsin. Dave’s new series on Legacy Family Tree Webinars, “Essential Skills for New Genealogists,” has proven a popular tool for folks starting out as researchers. With Billie Stone Fogarty, he is co-founder of The Genealogy Symposium, Inc., which presents programs on methodology, resources and archival research for libraries, archives, historical and genealogical societies nationwide. In that role, he edits the online journal, Z: The Journal of Genealogy, a resource for genealogy’s learning community.
A veteran coordinator and instructor at multiple genealogy institutes and national conferences, Dave has taught on government documents and libraries, churches and religious communities, advanced methodology, land records, researching in courthouses, libraries and archives and research in British America. His lecture topics include migration and immigration, churches and their records, English research, research in the states of the old Northwest Territory, evidence analysis and correlation, and strategies for beginning, and continued, learning about the joy to be had in genealogy.
A retired Protestant minister, Dave lives outside Madison with his wife of 40+ years (whose genealogy is much more interesting than his). They have three adult children, in the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest.
